Seth Nehil is a sound and video artist creating work for a variety of contexts, including performance and installation. His sonic palette is idiosyncratic - a combination of manipulated acoustic recordings, voices, instruments, granular synthesis and field recordings. Filled with off-kilter rhythms, sudden junctures, explosive bursts and richly detailed spaces, Nehil’s music is oddly dramatic and entirely unique. His hybrid compositions draw equally from classic musique concréte, film sound design, hip hop production and industrial music. “[It’s] not too often you come across something that just sounds like little else.” - Brian Olewnick, Just Outside.
In addition to recorded and live-mixed sound, Seth Nehil has collaborated with dance and video artists, choreographers, and theater companies to produce original scores, multimedia performances and video installations. His own original performance pieces bring together multi-screen video, multi-channel recorded sound and live performers to explore dynamic, quasi-narrative spaces in between cinema and dance. He is currently completing research for an experimental documentary on the use of “attack therapy” in the so-called Troubled Teen Industry and the historical roots of child behavior modification.
Seth Nehil has released over 15 albums of experimental sound on international labels, including Sonoris (France) and Senufo Editions (Italy). He has given concerts across Europe, Japan and the US. Nehil received an MFA in Music/Sound from Bard College and teaches sound design, sound art and video at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, Washington State University and Portland State University.
Seth Nehil makes sound for listening, performance, and installation. Over the last 15 years he has crafted a unique and unusual sonic world, mixing acoustic and electronic sources, field recordings, granular synthesis, and voice. He has released over 15 albums and has collaborated with dance companies, performers, and video artists.
