Lair
Cut paper
2010

Lair is a series of drawings in cut paper - webs, nets, knots, networks, and nests. They were made through improvisational processes, following loose systems of interconnecting lines and junctures. Lair continues an interest in “unerasable” drawing procedures: once cut into paper, the lines cannot be uncut - any further response must take into account the current state of the work, as the composition emerges. Over a year, new techniques and innovations were introduced, new variations and combinations: ruler cut, hand cut, straight cut, droopy cut, wavy cut, density, openness, sectionality, borders, and so on. Lair is an exercise in visual music, inspired by the sinuous lines, rhythms and intersections of melody, pattern and repetition.
